In 1923 Henry Clay Morrison, then the president of Asbury College, opened a seminary school, the Asbury Theological Seminary (ATS). The seminary was located in Wilmore, Kentucky and has Mr. Morrison as its first president. Since its foundation, the school has been served by 8 presidents that were competent to serve and lead the seminary.
During 1940, to comply for the accreditation requirements, the seminary broke away from the college. This seminary institution has gained accreditation from the following educational organizations: Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada, and The University Senate of the United Methodist Church.
This institution shows its deep Methodical roots through its adherence to the Wesleyan-Arminian theological doctrines. ATSs professed mission to the world was to groom individuals for evangelism and to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ all over the world through the power of the Holy Spirit and the glory of the Father.
Asbury Theological Seminary has two campuses; these are the Kentucky and Florida Dunnam campuses. This institution offers online courses also. The Kentucky campus which is located in Wilmore, Kentucky, offers to its students courses in the classical and practical disciplines that would pave the way for the lifelong learners to come to know their faith better. The Florida campus, on the other hand, gives opportunity to the growing Latin community in Florida, and the neighboring regions, to study the Latino/Latina Studies Program. This program is developed to aid in strengthening ministerial skills through offering novel theological education.
ATS offers a no-wall seminary experience to individuals who are either always on the go or are far from the two physical campuses. Students, who are enrolled in this program, can have a Certificate in Christian Studies, and have a chance to take up courses on Master of Divinity, or on a Master of Arts degree.
Individuals who are interested to enroll in this seminary institution is given the choice to enroll in the following programs: Master of Divinity, Master of Arts either in Biblical Studies or in Theological Studies, Master of Arts (in either of the following: Christian Education, Christian Leadership, Christian Ministries, Counseling, Intercultural Studies, Marriage and Family Counseling, Mental Health Counseling, Pastoral Counseling, World Missions and Evangelism, or Youth Ministry), or in Master of Theology either in Biblical Studies, or World Mission and Evangelism.
Apart from the Master programs that are offered, Asbury Theological Seminary also offers post-graduate programs. These include courses in Doctor of Ministry, Doctor of Philosophy, and Doctor of Missiology programs.
Morrison once wrote, "We are believing and undertaking to build up a Seminary for the training of a ministry that will bring millions of lost souls through Christ to salvation." Today, Asbury Theological Seminary enjoys a good reputation and is known as an institution that offers financial aids to deserving individuals.
